Hut 2359 The oldest Beach Hut in the UK located in Bournemouth East beach
Another of Bournemouth’s claims to fame is that the UK’s first public beach huts were sited here in 1909. Although royalty and the nobility had used beach huts since the early 1800s, those less well-heeled could only look-on with envy. At Bournemouth East, you can hire the town’s oldest hut, number 2359, from the Council: A blue plaque tells its history and you’ll be ideally placed to soak up the bustling atmosphere.

There is a mix of privately-owned and Council-owned huts along this busy stretch of the prom. Access is restricted for events such as the air show, but it is a wonderful place to be for people-watching. There are lots of lower-key events taking place throughout the year so, as you enjoy a steaming cup of tea, you will often witness runners or walkers passing, often in fancy dress!
