The word 'chine' means a deep narrow ravine cut through soft rocks by a water course descending steeply to the sea. The area between Middle and Alum Chine presented a perfect landing and hiding place for smugglers. Often teams of packhorses would wait on the cliff tops for cargoes of illicit goods to arrive.
From Durley Chine, a short walk towards Pool and Sandbanks brings you to Alum Chine beach another of the areas fantastic Blue Flag award winning beaches. Alum Chine is the largest of Bournemouth's four chines and got it's name from the local alum mining industry in the 16th century. The Alum was used in manufacturing and medicine after a small mine was established in 1564.
